Improving Your Business Ranking In Local Search

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is all about getting your website to show up closer to the top of the search results. When searching on Google, the results take into account your location based on your IP address or other location data. This helps give you the quality results that you’re looking for, helping you connect with products and service providers in your area.

Local search is important. It is especially important for small businesses, who have customers in the area asking for your product or service. Think of it as having a prime store location on the main street; where the traffic is, business follows.

Local SEO is important for most of the businesses in a town but is especially helpful (and necessary) for the following businesses:

  • Lawyers & Law Firms
  • Doctors & Medical Practices
  • Plumbers & Service Providers
  • Restaurants & Coffee Shops

This blog post will help provide a basic understanding of local SEO, focusing only on the ‘organic’, or unpaid, side of appearing in the search results.

Here are some statistics to get us started:

  • 50% of people who did a local search on their phone went to a physical store within one day.
  • 18% of local mobile searches lead to a sale within one day.
  • 78% of local-based searches on a mobile device end in purchases being made offline.

As a small business, you may be competing with businesses who can provide products or services on a larger scale. For a downtown shop or bookstore, Amazon is a competitor who takes business from the local economy. But if you have the item in stock and can provide it at a competitive rate, local search could benefit you having customers walk through the door instead of shopping online.

So we know now that local search is important and can give you access to customers that you may not yet be serving. But how do we build ranking in local search? There are a variety of tactics to build your organic search ranking but they can be simplified into the following three, which we will explore in more detail. The three activities are:

  • Content Creation
  • On-Page Optimizations
  • Link Building

Content Creation
